The 6th Asian Sites of Conscience regional network meeting was held in Dili July 29-31 2011 at the ex-Camarca Balide prison site which now hosts the post-CAVR truth commission secretariat and the Living Memory ex-political prisoners project in Timor Leste. Participants from historical sites of conscience in the Asian region including Liberation War Museum Bangladesh, Gandhi Ashram Bangladesh, May 18 Memorial Foundation, Korea, Aceh Human Rights Museum, Indonesia, and staff from Sites of Conscience headquarters in New York attended the meeting along with local Timorese participants. We also met with Kirsty Sword Gusmao, wife of the Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao and with Jose Ramos Horta, the President and PeaceJam Nobel Peace Laureate at his home in DIli.
Memorable moment: On my first night, I went to the beach and there were young men who had found a turtle nest and were hatching and releasing the baby turtles to the ocean. Most of the turtles were released to the ocean and remarkably, they knew instinctively which way to swim and crawl to get the the deep water out in the ocean. However, a small few of the baby turtles were hatched too early from the eggs and must have died as they weren't completely formed yet. So I was feeling both sad and happy. |
